NEBULA – NYC Shows (2001)

Eddie Glass letting guitar scream

A look back at two Nebula shows in NYC 2001

Almost 20 years ago, Nebula brought their unique, heavy psych rock to my area. Eddie Glass and company rolled through New York City for two back to back gigs @ Mercury Lounge. That venue and Brownies put on some great gigs. Here is some data pulled from Atomic Ritual site that helped me remember the line up and nerd like minutiae.

What I remember:

June 1st show was ridiculous. I enjoyed JJ Paradise’s Player Club but remember very little about them. They did fit on the bill very nicely.

Cherry Valence however, left an impression I have not forgotten since. They had a raw stage presence and huge energy. Sometimes two percussionists that would duel and play off each others beats. I saw them twice once here and another time at a hole in the wall in New Brunswick. Both times were high energy , quality performances. Nebula was so good I decided to come back the next night. There was fire. Literally, the flames from Ruben Romano lighting the gong on fire heated my face. They played their usual heavy space psych in the way that only Eddie Glass can.

The volume of Eddie Glass and Nebula was deafening, the rock was heavy yet layered with blasts into outer space. Luckily I had ear plugs.

Still going . give the link some love for some heavy psych rock

The next night was with Burning Brides and Brought Low. These two bands also fit the bill well. I can’t remember the details. The bigger picture about these bands is I am fairly sure they were heavy and had some heavy boogie elements. I would gladly like to have seen them again so that I could formulate a more educated opinion. I think Nebula was just as good the 2nd night and the set list may have a slightly different encore or song or two. Highlights were the signature s/t song and album song To The Center, Giant, Do it Now, and a handful of songs from the EP’s out  at that time such as Clearlight, etc.

I was definitely tired and singed from the heat of NYC , the fiery gong, and having back to back late nights driving back to NJ but it was so worth it. Thank you to all the artists.
