Rare Deafheaven Destruction Unit Photos Pt. 1

Deafheaven photos from 2013. Phoenix Arizona. It just so happens I saw Deafheaven a while back. Aside from a cursory listen of Sunbather, I don’t know their material. The new LP Infinite Granite, thusfar sounds very promising. This track and video is insanely good, filled with sonic layers of guitar, thudding bass, sweet drum fills, and angelic background voices and sounds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXTBQQU191Y&list=OLAK5uy_k4_qO9VPqwEutA9Kb5jVE68NnrVGX0unI&index=2

Initially, I went to see Tempe’s Destruction Unit and as a bonus I discovered Wreck and Reference.

Likewise, as good as Deafheaven is, Wreck and Reference stole my interest. A duo featuring drums. The other player on vocals and wearing what looked like a sample pad ( Novation launch pad ? ) to the effect similar of Darth Vader’s chest control panel. If I can’t find pics of this they will turn up I’m sure.

This band achieved quite a mood for only two members. By now their sound has probably grown. At the time of this live performance they were minimal and still powerful. Thunderous drums that seem to mimic a robotic synthesized beat one moment, then very human like fills or hits. The singer pressing buttons on his chest to activate various samples. Some of which had gloom and funerary implications to them. Given my challenges finding bandmates , hats off to any 2 or 3 pieces that are tearing shit up. Sadly to my discredit, I lost track of this band after this show. I did pick up their shirt and album that they were promoting on The Flenser Records. I believe it is titled ” Want “

Deafheaven were no slouches. They put on a show that kept my interest. Mostly due to lead singer George’s unique mannerisms. A fairly lumbering frame that sings passionately and intensely.

The bloke is sweating bullets and salivating and drooling.

If one was acting and not earnestly performing, I wonder to what end ? People may talk smack about him, but at least George is up there doing his own thing. In other words, I don’t think anyone would have to be a fan to watch them perform and get a little bit of something out of it.

They put on a show unlike some schmucks that just stand around waiting for people to stop looking at their phones. Anyone who gives this band shit? I’m waiting for your demos, albums, and tours. I didn’t think so. Check out this video and song which is on par with Deafheaven’s video and song above. https://meatsheetfanzine.com/nothing-say-less-single/

Nick / Destructing

Destruction Unit ? Unsure if they played songs and not just a free form set. They are always great to see as I reckon I saw them one other time. The way Nick Nappa plays guitar , visually paints a picture only that he can create. The volume is uncompromisingly loud. By sheer luck I captured pictures in which the angles of the guitar necks created interesting triangular compositions. I will post them later or hold off for now.
