Washed Out – Time To Walk Away – Sub Pop
The single Time To Walk Away by Washed Out is a hipsters wet dream. Ernest Greene, aka Washed Out, has announced his new album Purple Noon on Sub Pop. Time To Walk Away is mellow with electronic beats that accent the upstroke. This guy must not be able to go to the bathroom unbothered in Portland , Brooklyn , or other city containing large per capita hipster population.
The song shows strong production skills and is easy to digest. The more the listener likes understated pop the more likely you will dig this.
It’s mandatory that you drink PBR or White Claw while watching or listening to Washed Out ‘s single Time To Walk Away
The video is very angsty and referencing two youth’s relationship that falls apart. The young man is a skater and the highlight was seeing an Alien Workshop tattoo on a wrist. There are cliches like showering together. Conversely, I love the sunny park clips because of the well composed camera shots. Normally this type of music video doesn’t resonate all that much for me but I do give credit to the cinematographer. Many of the shots are rich in composition and light /dark contrast. They are a natural talent and /or paid attention in art school.
I don’t know much else about the Washed Out save that he got his music into the opening credits of the show Portlandia.
The album cover for Purple Noon is minimal , artsy, and glowing with evening sky tones. It catches my eye longer than other generic album artwork.
Time To Walk Away is perfect for a mix or playlist if one wants to take an aggressive attitude down two to three notches. It’s on the brink of huge major label focus group, mass produced music. The artistic sensibility of Washed Out as a visual and sonic package redeems itself. It’s not in the electro auto tune fodder camp, not yet. Washed Out could easily keep going and attract the next level of label signing, be it good , bad , or neutral.
Fans can pre-order the LP now in vinyl and digital formats via Sub Pop here. Purple Noon releases on August 7.
