The Cutters – s/t Bandcamp Demo

Cutters – punk hardcore from Australia

The Cutters cover art

Our continuing hardcore journey takes us to the land Down Under. This self-titled Cutters offering is serving us wonderful hardcore realness from Melbourne, Australia.

Released in late June, it has a really great and deliberate sound. It has elements of a more aggressive, nasty UK punk circa early 80’s mixed with some US hardcore of the same era.

In this 3-song hot one, the drums sound great. Nothing fancy for the most part, just really pounding, especially on the first track where it makes you feel like you just drank an energy drink and then snorted some coke. (say no to drugs kids)

Guitars… aggressive with competent flourishes.

Vocals that sound very realistically discontented. (as opposed to a cookie monster crust vocal style which goes for over the top). But to me sounding more threatening, like “I don’t even want to talk to this guy cuz he looks and sounds pissed at something real and may take it out on me” type of vibe.

The opener “Chewed Up Fortune” does its job, a really solid opening with a build up to a vicious sounding statement about disappointment and frustration.

Definitely the stand out for me. It really grabs your attention and makes you want to listen further… a real toe tapper.

Next serving is “Robo Debt Blues” which is a great song that just kicks in and gives you an angry rant about financial issues… in a hardcore way.

Last is “Twister” which is probably the most interesting one. It sounds like it is really trying to describe someone who went thru and survived an actual tornado. Capturing the chaos and desperation of the impending destruction… again, in a hardcore way. Also, with an ending where the guitars seem to portray the cacophony of said destruction and finally capping it off with a simple phrase “nowhere left to hide”. Not many bands can “end a song” anymore but his is definitely an exception.

Not sure if this made it on your radar but you can check it out on Bandcamp… and I think you should. https://cuttersmelbourne.bandcamp.com/album/cutters

Check out this band that may have gone overlooked as of late, https://meatsheetfanzine.com/scowl-ep-santa-cruz/

Is it coincidence that Australia and New Zealand has come up in my blog as of late? I think not. Please support The Cutters, Even As We Speak, and The Beths from NZ as they are the finest in their classes. Thanks to the bands, Bernard and Cuzface for turning me on to some new sounds. The music allows me travel vicariously to these lands.
