What Awaits Us – A Beyond Story – New Documentary

What Awaits Us late edition review.

Late pass version (Step!) of documentary review. “What Awaits Us” is by Kevin Egan the singer of Beyond. Although I am nowhere near caught up on hardcore and there are many missing pieces from the past in my years of listening, luckily I knew about this band. It’s the story of seminal band, Beyond. Kevin Egan, frontman of Beyond has compiled various footage and interview that tells their story.  click here https://vimeo.com/ondemand/whatawaitsus#:~:text=WHAT%20AWAITS%20US%2C%20A%20Beyond,try%20to%20figure%20out%20where

If you have never heard Beyond you are missing out as they are underrated and very accomplished musicians among their peers. So it was naturally a point of interest for me.
Documentary feels like a DIY effort but it is done well enough so that that DIY doesn’t derail from the stories or other key points. Let’s get into it a little deeper.
Without going into detail I’ll leave that to the doc What Awaits Us.. Beyond touched many that came after.

The earlier part of the documentary deals with Third Planet. This was Tom Capone’s ( who went on to to Quicksand, Bold, and others) band pre Beyond. The way that Kevin and friends depict Third Planet make it seem as if it’s one of those moments where only a handful of people saw something really cool and outrageous. Sadly I will never know but at least I was able to check out this movie and the band, Beyond. Those who are interviewed are too numerous to name but there are many from the 1988 hardcore scene. Basically the heroes of the New York Hardcore scene that came up through Revelation and Schism records.

Each one of their stories confirms what I have come to know. The energy and musicianship of Beyond is unmatched, special, and holds up over time.

How can you not lose your shit when “Save Ourselves” comes on?!?! Also when the footage of “Save Ourselves” is played at Rev Fest I got a bit of a chill up my spine. Very tight musicianship and powerful. I doubt that I’m alone. This is available on Vimeo and for just five bucks you can witness this in case you haven’t already. Linked above. This is essential viewing for anyone who happens to be fan of Beyond. I am thankful for this behind the scenes in depth look at the band I would have never been able to see otherwise.
